My favourite game was Poi Rakau because it looks like fun and everyone has a great laugh.
The coal of the game is to catch the stick before it falls.
Rule 1 NO PUSHING THE STICKS IN THE GROUND.
Rule 2 YOU MUST CATCH THE STICK BEFORE IT HIT THE GROUND.
I am going to play this game when my cousins when they come at Christmas.
Kia Ora Caleb,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Jordan and I'm the Kootuitui (Papakura, South Auckland) cluster manager. I like the game you've chosen; my favourite Māori game to play is Tī Rākau, which is quite similar to Poi Rākau, only the instruments that are used are shorter sticks and you sit down while you throw the sticks to one another.
The game is typically played to a rhythm or a waiata.
Well done on providing pictures for your viewers, it really helps us to understand the technicalities of the game.
Do you have any idea why the Māori people played Poi Rākau? Other than the goal of catching the stick before it fell— do you know the origins of the game?
Keep up the good work Caleb,
Cheers,
Jordan
